Anthracnose is a pesky condition that often manifests as leaf spots, leaf cupping or curling, and premature leaf drop. While it may not pose a significant threat to the overall health of your trees, seeking appropriate treatment can mitigate its impact and promote optimal tree growth.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Anthracnose

When it comes to identifying anthracnose, keep an eye out for the following telltale signs:

  1. Tan to brown irregular-shaped spots or blotches on young leaves.
  2. Distorted, cupped, or curled appearance of infected leaves.
  3. Springtime leaf drop in severe cases, with trees rebounding with a fresh growth of leaves by midsummer. This occurrence is more common among Sycamore trees than Maples and other tree species found in Central Missouri.
  4. Tan to dark brown spots on mature leaves, often accompanied by minor wounds caused by insect feeding. However, mature leaves generally do not become distorted or cupped.

Treatment Considerations

While anthracnose treatment is not typically necessary, it may be warranted if your tree has experienced significant leaf loss for several consecutive years. In such cases, our skilled arborists can administer an effective treatment regimen using fungicide sprays. This targeted approach helps combat anthracnose and encourage the rejuvenation of your tree's foliage.
